Aztecs Volleyball Earn Sweep Against Mesa Community College

The Pima Community College volleyball team (16-13, 6-8 in ACCAC) earned its first sweep in almost a month on Wednesday at the West Campus gym.

The Aztecs defeated Mesa Community College in three set 25-18, 25-22, 25-21. With the win, the Aztecs moved into the No. 4 spot in the ACCAC Division II standings with a week and-a-half left in the regular season. The top four teams get into the Region I, Division II tournament.

Sophomores Whitney Nesbitt (Cienega HS) and Arisa Chavez put down the final two kills to help the Aztecs seal the first set win. They led by as much as seven points in the set.

The Aztecs led by five points early in the second set but Mesa came back and made it a tight game the rest of the way. With the score tied at 22-22, Victoria Davis (Sahuaro HS) put down two kills and Nesbitt sealed the win with a block to put Pima in control of the match.

Trailing 14-13 in the third set, the Aztecs rallied off seven straight set points to take a 20-14 lead. Davis had three kills in that stretch. A little later with the Aztecs up 23-21, sophomore Mariah Rodriguez (Tucson Magnet HS) and Brooklyn Scarborough (Thatcher HS) put down the final kills to seal the win.

Davis finished the match with 14 kills and 17 digs and had a 2.4 pass rating. Sophomore Jamie Holliday (Sahuaro HS) finished the match with 14 kills and 12 digs while fellow sophomore Miranda Bingham (Safford HS) had 35 assists and 18 digs. Freshman Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher HS) had six kills and two aces and finished with a .263 hitting percentage. Angel Chavez (Mingus Union HS) had 14 digs and one ace while Arisa Chavez had five kills and 10 digs.

The Aztecs will play their final regular season road match at No. 3 ranked Glendale Community College on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
