Davis, Riesgo and Schmich finish with double-doubles but Aztecs fall to Mesa to end season

The Pima Community College volleyball team closed out the 2017 season on Friday at the West Campus Gymnasium.

The Aztecs fell in straight sets to No. 12 Mesa Community College 25-17, 25-19, 25-19.

The Aztecs fell behind in the first set and were able to narrow the deficit to three points on four occasions down the stretch. The Thunderbirds rallied off six of the final seven points to take the first set.

The Aztecs faced an eight point deficit in the second set and cut it to four points on two occasions but the Thunderbirds won the final two points to take control of the match.

In the third set, the Aztecs trailed early but kept it close as they cut it to two points at 14-12 but the Thunderbirds maintained the advantage and took the final set.

Sophomores Victoria Davis (Sahuaro HS), Kayli Riesgo (Cienega HS) and freshman Kaitlin Schmich (Mountain View HS) all finished with double-doubles in the match.

Davis produced her 12th double-double of the season as she led the Aztecs with 17 kills and 14 digs. Schmich finished with her 13th double-double as she had 11 kills and 13 digs. Riesgo also had her 13th double-double of the season as she had 37 assists and 12 digs.

Freshman Lyrica Tavesi (Pima HS) contributed with nine kills while sophomore Anissa Conrad (Sahuaro HS) had 23 digs.

The Aztecs finished the season with a 7-18 overall record and 4-11 in ACCAC conference play.
