Aztecs women's cross country take second place; four earn All-Region honors

The Pima Community College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Region I Championships on Saturday at Shalimar Country Club in Tempe.

The women's team took second place with a team score of 57 points. Central Arizona College took first place with 22 points. The Aztecs beat out Mesa Community College, who placed third with 60 points.

Freshman Katherine Bruno (Canyon del Oro HS) crossed the finish line in second place out of 34 competitors with a 5K time of 18 minutes, 35.7 seconds. Fellow freshman Sionna Johnson (Cienega HS) produced her best race of the season as she took fourth place with a time of 19:03.3. Bruno and Johnson were named first team All-Region.

Freshman Cindy Corrales (Nogales HS) finished in 14th place with a time of 20:22.2 earning third team All-Region honors.

Freshman Kaylen Fox (Sahuaro HS) took 19th with a time of 20:49.4 while sophomore Arianna Roche (Cienega HS) placed 22nd at 21:25.2.

The Aztecs men's team took fifth place with a team score of 105. Glendale Community College finished one point ahead of the Aztecs in the standings with 104. Central Arizona College was first with 31 points.

Freshman Morgan Risch (Flowing Wells HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs as he took ninth place out of 41 runners with a time of 26:05.1 in the 8K race. He earned second team All-Region honors.

Sophomore Collin Dylla (Ironwood Ridge HS) almost reached All-Region honors as he finished in 16th place with a time of 26:31.7. The top 15 receive All-Region awards.

Sophomore Victor Bustamante (Flowing Wells HS) placed 25th crossing the finish line at 27:26.0 while freshman Luis Oviedo (Rio Rico HS) was 27th at 27:57.4. Freshman Connor Deakin (Ironwood Ridge HS) was Pima fifth finisher in 28th place with a time of 28:02.4.

The Aztecs will head to the NJCAA National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Lakeside Golf Course in Ft. Dodge, IA. The men's race will be at 10:00 a.m. and the women's race will follow at 11:00 a.m.
