Stine and Bracamontes each have 4 RBIs in baseball's sweep at No. 3 Mesa

The Pima Community College baseball team (23-20, 16-16 in ACCAC) earned a much needed sweep on the road on Saturday as it defeated No. 3 ranked Mesa Community College. The Aztecs snapped a six-game losing streak and beat Mesa three of the four games played this season.

Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS) finished the day 4 for 7 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Ruben Bracamontes (Sunnyside HS) finished 3 for 8 with four RBIs.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, (3) Mesa CC Thunderbirds 5 (7 innings)

The Aztecs scored seven runs in the 4th inning and held on to win the first game 9-5. Pima led 9-0 and Mesa scored five runs in the 6th inning. Up 3-0 in the 4th inning, Stine hit a solo home run and later hit a two-run RBI single. Bracamontes also contributed with a two-run RBI single. Devin Harrison (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit his seventh home run of the season with a solo shot in the 3rd inning. Stine finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs and a run scored. Harrison went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Brandon Burke was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Bracamontes finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs.

Justin Hammergren (Sahuaro HS) picked up the win (4-3) after he pitched five innings giving up two runs (two earned) on three hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Chris Kucko (Sahuarita HS) picked up the save after he threw the final one and one-third innings with one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 6, (3) Mesa CC Thunderbirds 4 (9 innings)

The Aztecs scored four runs in the 8th inning to win the second game 6-4. They trailed 4-1 but scored a run in the 7th inning on Bracamontes' groundout RBI. In the 8th inning, Al Cruz (Nogales HS) hit a two-run RBI double to tie the game at 4-4. With two outs in the inning, Bracamontes hit a go-ahead RBI single to score pinch runner David Oropeza (Nogales HS). Jaquese Moore (Marcos de Niza HS) followed with an RBI double to score pinch runner Ryan Ramsower (Salpointe Catholic HS).

Bracamontes finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Cruz went 1 for 1 with two RBIs and Moore was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Stine finished 1 for 4 with a run scored.

The relief pitchers closed out the game as Vinnie Tarantola (Sahuaro HS) picked up the win (4-3). He threw three and two-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Kucko picked up his second save of the day after he threw the final two innings giving up one hit with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host Paradise Valley Community College in a conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
