Tarantola belts two homers but Aztecs baseball falls at Phoenix College

The Pima Community College baseball team (23-24, 16-20 in ACCAC) dropped a pair of games at Phoenix College on Saturday. The Aztecs have lost 10 of their last 12 as they fight to keep hold of the No. 4 seed in the Region I, Division II playoffs.

Vinnie Tarantola (Sahuaro HS) had a great day at plate going 3 for 5 hitting two home runs with five RBIs and two runs scored. Al Cruz (Nogalers HS) finished 5 for 7 with three runs scored, two doubles and an RBI.

Game 1: Phoenix College Bears 3, Pima CC Aztecs 1 (7 innings)

Tarantola hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning to give the Aztecs the lead but Phoenix scored two runs in the 5th and one in the 6th inning in Pima's 3-1 loss in the first game. The Pima offense managed seven hits as Tarantola finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Cruz went 2 for 3 with two doubles.

Chris Kucko (Sahuarita HS) threw a great game but took the loss (4-7) after he threw six innings giving up three runs (three earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts and two walks on 97 pitches.

Game 2: Phoenix College Bears 11, Pima CC Aztecs 9 (9 innings)

The Aztecs rallied in the late innings but came up short in their 11-9 loss in the second game. Down 11-2 in the 7th inning, Tarantola came through with a grand-slam. Later in the inning Marcus Catalano (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit an RBI single to cut Phoenix's lead to 11-7. David Oropeza (Nogales HS) scored on an error in the 8th and Cruz led off the 9th inning with a solo home run. The Aztecs left two runners on base in the 9th.

Tarantola finished 1 for 2 with four RBIs and a run scored. Cruz was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI while Oropeza went 2 for 2 with a run scored. Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS) finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Roy Aguirre (Douglas HS) took the loss (5-3) after he pitched four innings giving up nine runs (nine earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

The Aztecs have four games remaining in the regular season and will play at Glendale Community College on Tuesday in a doubleheader. The games are at noon and 2:30 p.m.
