Aztecs baseball drops doubleheader at Glendale CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (18-32, 9-29 in ACCAC) dropped a pair of ACCAC conference games on the road on Tuesday.

The Aztecs scored two runs in two games as they fell to Glendale Community College (32-21, 18-20). The Aztecs have lost seven straight.

Sophomore Miguel Figueroa (Tucson HS) pitched six strong innings in the first game while fellow sophomore Oscar Larranaga (Sunnyside HS) provided offense in the second game.

Game 1: Glendale CC Gauchos 2, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (7 innings): Figueroa (Tucson HS) threw six innings giving up two runs (two earned) on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk on 91 pitches. He took the loss and dropped to 2-8 on the season.

With two outs in the seventh inning, the Aztecs got two runners on base when sophomore Shawn Bracamontes (Sunnyside HS) hit a double and fellow freshman Logan Klunder was hit by a pitch. Freshman Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS) grounded out to end the game.

The Pima offense generated four hits for the game. Freshman Kyle Rivera went 2 for 2 with two singles. Larranaga led off the game with a single as he and Bracamontes each finished 1 for 3.

Game 2: Glendale CC Gauchos 12, Pima CC Aztecs 2 (7 innings): The Gauchos took the lead early with two runs in the first inning. The Aztecs cut into it in the top of the third inning but Glendale responded with five runs in the bottom half. They scored three runs in the sixth and tacked on two runs in the seventh inning to end the game.

Larranaga put the Aztecs on the board in the third inning when he scored on an error to cut the deficit to 2-1. He hit an RBI triple in the fifth inning to plate freshman Jared Kromminga (Empire HS), who drew a walk earlier in the inning.

Larranaga went 2 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a triple. Figueroa was 2 for 2 with a double and Bracamontes went 1 for 3.

Sophomore Andres Hackman (Empire HS) started the game and took the loss (2-2). He pitched two and two-third innings giving up seven runs (seven earned) on six hits with one strikeout and three walks.

The Aztecs will close out the 2017 season on Saturday when they play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
