Porchas and Padilla shine as Aztecs baseball sweeps GateWay CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (21-9, 9-6 in ACCAC) earned an ACCAC doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.
Sophomores Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS) and Rafael Padilla (Nogales HS) continue to stand out at the plate. Porchas finished the day 6 for 8 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Padilla went 5 for 8 with three RBIs and four runs scored.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, GateWay CC Geckos 4: The Aztecs broke the game open with six runs in the 4th inning to win the first game.
    Sophomore Javier Nava gave the Aztecs a cushion as he cleared the bases with a three-run RBI triple scoring Padilla, Porchas and freshman Karl Koerper to make it 7-2. Porchas hit an RBI single earlier in the inning. Padilla reached on an error which scored sophomore Richard Ware. Freshman JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) came in as a pinch runner and scored on a balk to cap off the inning. The Aztecs led 8-2.
    Porchas was flawless at the plate as he went 4 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Nava hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 6th inning and finished 1 for 2 with four RBIs and a walk. Padilla was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.
    Sophomore Adam Moraga (Sunnyside HS) picked up the win (4-2) as he threw six innings giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and six walks.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, GateWay CC Geckos 2: The Aztecs put up five runs in the 5th inning and Porchas and Koerper went yard as the Aztecs completed the sweep.
    The Aztecs hit for the cycle in the 5th inning. Ware hit an RBI double to drive in freshman Cole Cummings to make it 2-0. Sophomore Phillip Sikes hit an RBI triple to drive in Ware. Padilla drove in Sikes with an RBI single and Porchas capped it off with a two-run homer to make it 6-0.
    After back-to-back singles by Porchas and Padilla to lead-off the 7th, Koerper stepped up and hit a three-run bomb.
    Padilla finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Porchas went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Cummings was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs while Koerper went 1 for 2 with three RBIs, a run scored and two walks. Sikes and Ware each went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.
    Sophomore Conner Nantkes got the win (3-3) as he pitched seven and two-third innings giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will hit the road on Saturday when they play at Paradise Valley Community College for an ACCAC doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
