Aztecs baseball drops doubleheader at No. 7 Cochise College

The Pima Community College baseball team (26-14, 12-11 in ACCAC) gave up runs late in the games on Tuesday in its ACCAC Division I doubleheader at No. 7 ranked Cochise College (34-7, 18-6).

  • Game 1: (7) Cochise College Apaches 9, Pima CC Aztecs 2: The Aztecs trailed 3-2 but the Apaches scored six runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to pull away.
    Freshman Karl Koerper hit a two-out RBI single in the 6th inning driving in freshmen Cole Cummings and JJ Rollon (Skyline HS). The Aztecs finished the game with six hits.
    Koerper was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Cummings went 1 for 3 with a run scored and Rollon finished 1 for 2 with a run.
    Sophomore Adam Moraga (Sunnyside HS) took the loss (6-3) as he pitched five and one-third innings giving up seven runs (one earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

  • Game 2: (7) Cochise College Apaches 7, Pima CC Aztecs 2: The Aztecs held the lead but the Apaches scored six runs in the 7th inning to take the lead for good.
    The 6th inning was good to the Aztecs again as Rollon tied the game with an RBI single to score sophomore Fabian Ferreira (Tucson HS), who led off the inning with a double. Three batters later, sophomore Garett Lake drove in Rollon to put Pima up 2-1.
    The Apaches scored six runs in the 7th inning.
    Rollon went 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. Lake was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Sophomore Phillip Sikes finished 2 for 4.
    Sophomore Conner Nantkes took the loss (3-4) as he pitched six and one-third innings giving up three runs (three earned) on two hits with seven strikeouts and seven walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
