Aztecs football falls short in tug of war battle at Arizona Western College
The Pima Community College football team (6-3, 4-2 in WSFL) closed out the regular season on Saturday at Arizona Western College (6-4, 4-3) as the Aztecs could not get the final stop with under a minute to play.
- The No. 16 ranked Aztecs fell to the Matadors 24-20 dropping their final two games of the regular season.
- Up 20-17, the Aztecs seemed to be in business after sophomore Macarius Blount (Mountain Pointe HS) intercepted a pass to give the Aztecs the ball back with 2:18 left. The offense went three-and-out and were forced to punt after taking just 27 seconds off the clock.
- The Matadors took over at their own 42-yardline. The drive went six plays in just 1:02 and quarterback Logan Byrd scored on a 1-yard run. The Aztecs got the ball with 44 seconds left but freshman quarterback Brooks Ringers threw four straight incompletions to end turn it over on downs.
- The Aztecs trailed 10-0 after the first quarter but rallied back in the second. Pima got on the board when Ringer scored on a 2-yard run with 6:10 left in the quarter. He found Larry Rembert for a 36-yard completion to set up the score. One minute later, the Aztecs took the lead after sophomore Garius Thompson intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for the score to put the Aztecs up 13-10.
- The Matadors picked off Ringer and returned it 82 yards for the score to retake the lead at 17-13 with 11:31 left in the third quarter. The Aztecs responded on their next drive when Ringer threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Jon Cole to give Pima the lead back at 20-17 with 10:19 left in the third.
The Aztecs are bowl eligible and will find out on Wednesday if they receive an invitation.
