Aztecs men's basketball win rebound and free throw battle to overcome Eastern Arizona College

The Pima Community College men's basketball team (21-2, 13-2 in ACCAC) won its seventh straight game on Saturday as the Aztecs hanged tough to beat Eastern Arizona College (11-12, 5-10).

Sophomores Ilunga Moise (Raymond S. Kellis HS) and Alize Travis went a combined 8 for 8 at the free throw line in the final 47 seconds to help the Aztecs beat the Gila Monsters 105-98.

The Aztecs opened a double digit lead in the first half after a 13-4 run in three minutes put them up 30-15. The Aztecs led 51-40 at halftime.

The Gila Monsters hit 10 3-pointers in the second half and closed the gap to 85-82 at one point but the Aztecs countered with a quick 6-0 run.

The Aztecs went 24 for 27 from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Gila Monsters 53-36 for the game.

Travis scored a team-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. He was 6 for 6 from the foul line. Moise had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds as he went 8 for 10 from the free-throw stripe.

The Pima bench provided a much-needed spark as it scored 40 points. Freshman Elloheim Clark led the way with 17 points on 6 for 9 shooting. Freshman Abram Carrasco (Cholla HS) had 13 points while Jeremiah Bailey chipped in with 10 points.

Freshman Robert Wilson (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored 15 points with six rebounds while sophomore Isaiah Murphy (Cienega HS) contributed with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Aztecs will be on the road on Wednesday when they play at South Mountain Community College at 7:30 p.m.
