Aztecs men's golfer Daniel Henely captures Mesa Invitational Individual Title

Aztecs men's golf freshman Daniel Henely (Cienega HS) became the first Pima men's golfer since 2016 to win a regular season individual championship after he took the top spot at the Mesa CC Invitational on Thursday. The Pima Community College men's golf team opened the 2022 season on Wednesday and Thursday at the Mesa Invitational.

*Play was cut short for the second round due to darkness so nine holes were counted in the results.

  • The Aztecs finished in second place in the final team standings with a score of 436 (293-143). The Aztecs shot a collective 1-under par in the second round.
  • Freshman Daniel Henely (Cienega HS) became the first Pima men's golfer to win a regular season tournament since Frankie Wu (Canyon del Oro HS) won the Mesa Invitational on March 15, 2016.
  • Henely finished at 5-under par for the tournament. He shot a 4-under par 68 in the first round and 1-under par 35 for the final round at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course.
  • Player's Quote: "This definitely feels good. I was ready for it all day and I just wanted to beat the sunlight. I was in zone; I heard I was winning and I was shocked," Henely said. "I've been working for this for so long, it's surreal.
    "The course was set up easy. Everyone in the field was going to play good. My game held up and I finished strong. I was supported by my team and coaches."
  • In the first round, Henely said he went 4-under par in the back nine. He finished the day in a three-way tie for the lead. Henely added that on the second day he birdied the 13th and 14th holes to help pad his lead.
  • Player's Quote: "I stayed confident. Coach Landyn (Lewis) helped me every step of the way," Henely added. "I knew who I had to beat and I knew I wouldn't lose."
  • Freshman Tommy Rosenvall shot a 2-over par 74 in his first round. Freshman AJ Quihuis (Salpointe Catholic HS) closed out his first round with a 3-over par 75 and freshman Max Krueger (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished with a 76. Second round scores were not made available.
  • The Aztecs will play in the Chandler-Gilbert CC Invitational on Feb. 25-26 at the Apache Creek Golf Club in Apache Junction, AZ. Teams will begin to tee off at 11:30 a.m.
