Marshall homers but Aztecs softball gets swept at Arizona Western College

The Pima Community College softball team (4-7, 2-4 in ACCAC) struggled with timely hitting as it got swept on Tuesday at Arizona Western College (17-1, 8-0).
The Aztecs left 21 runners on base for the afternoon.

  • Game 1: Arizona Western College Matadors 7, Pima CC Aztecs 2: The Aztecs cut the deficit in half in the middle innings but the Matadors countered with one in the 5th inning and two in the 6th.
    Freshman Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) led off the 3rd inning with a solo homerun to cut Arizona Western's lead to 4-1. Sophomore Alese Casper scored on an error to tack on a run in the 4th inning. Marshall was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored while Casper finished 2 for 4 with a run scored. The Aztecs left 10 runners on base.
    Casper took the loss on the mound (0-2) as she pitched six innings giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with one strikeout and four walks.

  • Game 2: Arizona Western College Matadors 5, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Aztecs scored all three runs in the 7th inning as the rally got cut short. The Matadors scored in the first three innings; which included two runs in the 3rd to make it 4-0.
    With one out in the 7th inning, Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) hit an RBI single to score Casper, who led off the inning with a single. Sophomore Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) followed with an RBI double to plate pinch runner Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS) to make it 5-2. Freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS) was hit a by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS). The Aztecs left 11 runners on base for the second game.
    Freshman Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (3-2) as she pitched two innings giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits.

The Aztecs will be on the road again on Thursday when they play at Paradise Valley Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
