Marshall hits walk-off, finishes with seven RBIs as Aztecs softball sweeps Glendale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (10-9, 8-6 in ACCAC) pushed its record over .500 on Tuesday as it picked up a doubleheader sweep over Glendale Community College (10-10, 5-9).
Freshman Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) finished the day 6 for 8 with seven RBIs and two runs scored. Fellow freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS) was 4 for 7 with five RBIs and a run scored.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Glendale CC Gauchos 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs took control with six runs in the 3rd inning and five in the 4th to earn the run-rule victory.
    Marshall, along with sophomores Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) and Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS), hit three straight RBI singles with one out in the 3rd inning. Adams capped it off with a three-run homer to make it 6-0.
    The Aztecs loaded the bases in the 4th inning with no outs as Marshall came through again with a two-run RBI single to plate sophomores Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) and Alese Casper. With one out and the bases loaded yet again, Adams drove in two runs with an RBI double to score Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) and Marshall.
    Adams finished 2 for 3 with five RBIs and a run scored. Marshall was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Gomez and Turner-Vizcarra each scored two runs while Caldera and Durazo-Corday each had an RBI and a run scored.
    Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) pitched all five innings giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk. She improved to 3-1 on the season.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 8, Glendale CC Gauchos 7 (8 innings): Marshall capped off her day with a walk-off RBI single to score Casper with one out.
    Trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the 8th, Gomez sacrificed freshman Samantha Angulo (Mountain View HS) to third base. Angulo scored after a fielder's choice hit from Casper. Turner-Vizcarra hit a single to put Casper on second base, which set up Marshall's game-winning RBI hit.
    Marshall hit a two-run RBI double in the 1st inning to put the Aztecs on the board. Casper hit a two-run RBI single in the 2nd inning to put Pima up 4-1 and Marshall had another RBI hit to score Gomez in the inning.
    Marshall finished the game 4 for 5 with four RBIs while Casper went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Adams was 2 for 4 and Caldera finished 2 for 4 with an RBI.
    Casper picked up the win in a relief appearance (3-2) as she pitched the final five innings giving up five runs (one earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will step away from ACCAC conference on Thursday as they play two games at Lincoln Park. They will face off with Madonna University (MI) at 3:30 p.m. and College of Lake County (IL) at 6:00 p.m.
