Garcia homers but Aztecs softball is swept at South Mountain CC

The Pima Community College softball team (15-16, 11-13 in ACCAC) dropped two games at South Mountain Community College (12-16, 7-16) on Thursday in an ACCAC doubleheader.

  • Game 1: South Mountain CC Cougars 7, Pima CC Aztecs 6: The Aztecs rallied to tie the game in the 7th but the Cougars hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to win.
    Down 6-2 in the top of the 7th, the Aztecs loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) hit a two-run RBI single to drive in sophomore Alese Casper and freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS). With two outs in the inning, sophomores Janice Garcia (Rio Rico HS) and Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS) hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 6-6.
    The Aztecs got on the scoreboard first as they scored two runs in the 1st inning. Sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) hit an RBI double and was later driven in by sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday's sacrifice-fly RBI.
    Caldera finished the game 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Marshall was 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Garcia went 1 for 1 with an RBI and a walk. Turner-Vizcarra finished 1 for 3 with two runs and Casper went 1 for 3 with a run.
    Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (4-5) as she pitched six and one-third innings giving up seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

  • Game 2: South Mountain CC Cougars 8, Pima CC Aztecs 1: The Aztecs tied the game in the 2nd inning but the Cougars scored three runs in each the 4th and 5th innings to take the lead.
    Garcia tied the game in the 2nd inning with a one-out solo home run. She finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Marshall and Durazo-Corday each finished 1 for 3.
    Casper took the loss (6-3) as she pitched three and two-third innings giving up four runs (four earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Softball Field on Saturday when they host Paradise Valley Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
