Marshall and Nerey lead the way as Aztecs softball sweeps at Chandler-Gilbert CC

The Pima Community College softball team (17-18, 13-15 in ACCAC) began the second half of the season on a high note after snapping its four-game losing streak on Saturday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (15-19, 13-17).
The Aztecs finished the day with 27 runs off 30 hits. Sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) was flawless at the plate in the first game as she finished the day 7 for 10 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Sophomore Alese Casper went 3 for 7 with four RBIs and four runs and sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) was 5 for 10 with three RBIs and five runs on the day.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 4: The Aztecs scored five runs in the 7th inning to help put the game away. The 1-4 batters in the lineup went a combined 11 for 18 with eight RBIs and 10 runs scored.
    Marshall and sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) had back-to back RBI singles in both the 1st and 7th innings.
    Marshall was perfect at the plate as she went 5 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored with RBI singles in the 1st, 4th and 7th innings. Casper hit an RBI triple in the 4th inning and finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Caldera went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored while Gomez was 2 for 5 with three runs scored. Freshman Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
    Freshman Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) threw a complete-game as she gave up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk. She is now 6-7 on the season.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 14, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 0 (6 innings): Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) tossed six shutout innings giving up three hits with three strikeouts and two walks on 78 pitches. She improved to 5-6 on the season.
    The Aztecs scored seven runs in the 6th inning. They loaded the bases with no outs as sophomore Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS), freshman Samantha Angulo (Mountain View HS) and Gomez hit three straight RBI singles.
    Casper hit a two-run RBI single in the 4th inning to score Lozania and Angulo. Marshall capped off the inning with an RBI single to make it 7-0.
    Gomez finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Lozania went 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored while Angulo also went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Marshall was 2 for 5 with an RBI and run and Casper finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

  • The Aztecs swept all four games this season against the Coyotes.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Softball Field on Tuesday when they host an ACCAC Division I doubleheader against Central Arizona College. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
