Turner-Vizcarra's 3-run homer helps seal Aztecs softball sweep at GateWay CC

The Pima Community College softball team (21-20, 17-17 in ACCAC) had to rally in the second game to secure a sweep on Tuesday at GateWay Community College (5-38, 4-32).
Sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) had a great day at the plate going 4 for 7 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) went 6 for 7 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Alese Casper picked up two wins on the mound.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, GateWay CC Geckos 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs started things off with a five-run 1st inning and Casper finished with five shutout innings.
    Sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) capped off the 1st inning with a three-run home run to make it 5-0. Marshall and sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) hit back-to-back RBI singles earlier in the inning.
    Marshall and Caldera went back-to-back again for their RBI hits in the 2nd inning. Sophomore Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS) hit an RBI single in the 3rd while freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS) had a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 4th.
    Marshall finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Caldera was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Durazo-Corday went 1 for 1 with three RBIs and a run scored. Turner-Vizcarra was 2 for 3 with a run.
    Casper (7-4) picked up the win as she went five innings giving up five hits on 56 pitches.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, GateWay CC Geckos 7: The Aztecs trailed 7-5 but scored five runs in the 7th inning to complete the rally.
    Turner-Vizcarra broke the 7-7 tie with a three-run shot on a full count with two outs in the top of the 7th inning. Lozania and Durazo-Corday scored the runs.
    The Aztecs did their damage with two outs in the inning. Caldera hit an RBI single driving in Casper to cut the deficit to 7-6 and Durazo-Corday tied the game with an RBI double to score Marshall.
    Marshall put the Aztecs on the board in the 1st inning with a two-run homer.
    Turner-Vizcarra fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle as she was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. She hit a double in the 2nd inning and singles in the 3rd and the 6th inning.
    Marshall went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Casper was 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Durazo-Corday finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run.
    Casper earned her second win of the day (8-4) as she pitched a complete-game giving up seven runs (seven earned) on 14 hits with five strikeouts on 107 pitches.

The Aztecs will hit the road again on Saturday when they play at Scottsdale Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
