Durazo-Corday has 5 RBIs in second game but Aztecs softball gets swept at Eastern Arizona College

The Pima Community College softball team (23-22, 19-19 in ACCAC) dropped a tough doubleheader in ACCAC Division I play on Tuesday at Eastern Arizona College (27-24, 23-19).
Sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) did much of her damage at the plate in the second game as she finished the day 3 for 8 with five RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) was 4 for 8 with an RBI and two runs scored.

  • Game 1: Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters 7, Pima CC Aztecs 6: The Aztecs tied the game with four runs in the 4th inning and took the lead in the 5th but left the game-tying run stranded on second base to end the game.
    Down 4-0 in the 4th, Munoz and sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) hit RBI singles to put Pima on the board. Freshman Kylee Leach hit a two-run RBI single to score Munoz and freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) to tie it at 4-4.
    In the 5th inning, sophomore Alese Casper reached base on an error and sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) drove her in with an RBI double.
    Casper tied the game in the 6th inning with a two-out RBI single to score freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS). The Gila Monsters took the lead for good with a run in the bottom half of the 6th.
    Durazo-Corday hit a single with one out in the 7th inning but Munoz and Turner grounded out to end the threat.
    Casper finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Munoz and Caldera each went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored while Leach was 1 for 1 with two RBIs. Durazo-Corday went 1 for 4.
    Freshman Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (8-9) as she pitched six innings giving up seven runs (seven earned) on 15 hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

  • Game 2: Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters 8, Pima CC Aztecs 6: The Aztecs' rally was cut short yet again in the 7th inning.
    The Aztecs took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning with Durazo-Corday hit a two-run RBI double to drive in sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) and Casper. The Gila Monsters scored six runs in the 3rd inning to take the lead.
    Munoz hit a leadoff double in the 6th and later scored on an error to cut the deficit to 7-3.
    In the 7th inning, Marshall hit a leadoff single and Caldera drew a walk. Durazo-Corday followed with a three-run blast to cut it to a two-run deficit but the Aztecs recorded three straight outs to end the game.
    Durazo-Corday went 2 for 4 with five RBIs and a run scored. Munoz, Gomez and Marshall each finished 2 for 4 with a run scored. Caldera was 0 for 2 with a run scored and two walks.
    Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (6-8) as she pitched two and two-third innings giving up six runs (six earned) on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will play their fourth straight road doubleheader on Saturday at Glendale Community College. First pitch is at noon.
