Casper goes 4 for 7 at the plate as Aztecs softball splits at Glendale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (24-23, 20-20 in ACCAC) held off a rally in the first game but had no answers on offense in the second game as it split at Glendale Community College (22-22, 17-21) on Saturday.
Sophomore Alese Casper finished the day 4 for 7 with two RBIs, two doubles and a run scored.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Glendale CC Gauchos 6: The Aztecs built up a lead and was able to hold off a furious rally by the Gauchos to win the first game.
    The Aztecs scored four runs in the 2nd inning; three of them scored on errors to take a 5-0 lead.
    The Aztecs posted another three runs in the 4th inning. Sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadows Ridge HS) hit an RBI single and freshman Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) capped off the inning with a two-run homer putting Pima up 8-0.
    Sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) hit a two-out solo home run in the 6th inning to make it 9-1.
    The Gauchos scored five runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to cut Pima's lead to 9-6.
    Casper added an insurance run with an RBI double to score sophomore Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS) in the 7th.
    Munoz and Casper each finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Marshall was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored while Caldera went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) was 2 for 3 with two runs.
    Freshman Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) picked up the win (9-9) as she pitched a complete-game giving up six runs (one earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

  • Game 2: Glendale CC Gauchos 7, Pima CC Aztecs 0: The Aztecs managed just two hits for the game as the Gauchos took control scoring three runs in the 2nd innings, two runs in the 3rd and two runs in the 5th.
    Casper reached base with a leadoff bunt single in the 4th inning and hit a two-out double in the 6th. She provided the only Pima offense as she finished 2 for 3.
    Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (6-9) as she pitched two and two-third innings giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Aztecs play three of their final four doubleheaders at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field. They will host No. 3 ranked Phoenix College (Division II) on Tuesday at the West Campus. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
