Triste homers and has 22 strikeouts as Aztecs softball splits with No. 5 Arizona Western College

The Pima Community College softball team (2-5, 2-5 in ACCAC) handed No. 5 ranked Arizona Western College (16-3, 9-1) its first ACCAC conference loss of the season on Tuesday.
Freshman Anisah Triste was doing work at the plate and on the mound. She went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. She also struck out 22 Matador batters on the day.

  • Pima CC Aztecs 1, (5) Arizona Western College Matadors 0: Triste hit a leadoff homerun to right field in the 6th inning to give the Aztecs the lead for good. She finished 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk.
    Sophomore Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 1 for 2 while freshman Malaealani Fraser (Salpointe Catholic HS) was 1 for 3. Freshman Lesly Cazares (Desert View HS) was 0 for 1 with two walks.
    Triste (2-1) picked up the win after pitching a complete-game giving up five hits with 13 strikeouts in 106 pitches.

  • (5) Arizona Western College Matadors 9, Pima CC Aztecs 8: Freshman Isabella Escobar hit a two-out triple but was stranded as freshman Danielle Batazar-Ochoa (Pueblo HS) struck out to end the game.
    The Aztecs took a 3-1 lead after the 1st inning. Triste hit an RBI double to score sophomore Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS). Cazares followed with a two-run RBI double to plate Fraser and Triste.
    The Aztecs made it 4-2 in the 3rd inning when Munoz hit a one-out RBI single to score Cazares, who doubled to lead off the inning.
    The Aztecs rallied with four runs in the 5th inning after the Matadors took a 5-4 advantage. Cazares came through with an RBI double scoring Triste to tie the game. She later scored on a passed ball to put Pima up 6-5. Freshman Mariah Bartlett hit an RBI single to score freshman Jazmin Ayala (Sunnyside HS) and Baltazar-Ochoa hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Munoz. The Aztecs led 8-5 but Arizona Western rallied off two runs in each the 6th and 7th innings.
    Cazares finished the game 3 for 3 with three doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Triste went 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Turner-Vizcarra was 2 for 4 with a run and Munoz finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
    Triste took the loss (2-2) after she pitched a complete-game giving up nine runs (six earned) on nine hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Softball Field on Thursday when they host Paradise Valley Community College. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
