Martinez homers but Aztecs Softball gets overwhelmed at Phoenix College

The Pima Community College softball team (13-19, 13-19 in ACCAC) had its four-game winning streak snapped on the road on Tuesday at No. 2 ranked Phoenix College (36-4, 30-4).
The Aztecs got outscored 33-3 for the day. Freshman Desiree Martinez (Canyon del Oro HS) was a bright spot on offense as she finished 3 for 4 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored.

  • Game 1: (2) Phoenix College Bears 15, Pima CC Aztecs 2 (5 innings): The Bears scored seven runs in the 1st inning and five in the 3rd inning to earn the run-rule win.
    The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the 5th inning. Freshmen Elise Muñoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Analisa Gomez (University HS) hit back-to-back RBI singles scoring freshmen Alize Rodriguez (Bourgade Catholic HS) and Martinez respectively.
    Muñoz and Gomez each finished 1 for 3 with an RBI. Rodriguez was 1 for 1 with a run scored while Martinez went 1 for 2 with a run. Freshmen Cerrina Barajas (Tucson Magnet HS) and Alejandra Castro were each 1 for 2 at the plate.
    Freshman Teresa Garza (Benson HS) took the loss as she pitched two innings giving up 11 runs (11 earned) on 12 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

  • Game 2: (2) Phoenix College Bears 18, Pima CC Aztecs 1 (5 innings): The game got away from the Aztecs early as the Bears scored in every inning for their second run-rule win.
    Martinez led off the 3rd inning with a solo home run to center field on a full count as she finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Kayla Gonzales (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 1 for 2 at the plate.
    Freshman Ali Montiel (Cholla HS) took the loss as she pitched three innings giving up 12 runs (12 earned) on 10 hits with one strikeout and five walks.
