Pima Athletics sets school records with 11 teams and 74 individuals named NJCAA All-Academic

The Pima Community College Athletics department set new records with 11 of the 13 teams receiving NJCAA All-Academic recognition and a new school record of 74 student-athletes earning All-Academic distinction.

Sophomore outfielder Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) was named second team NJCAA All-American. She is the first Pima softball NJCAA All-American since Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) in 2016. Munoz led the Aztecs with a .454 batting average, 89 hits, 76 runs, 26 doubles and 26 stolen bases. Photos by Stephanie van Latum

Pima Community College softball player Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) earned a national accolade for the 2023 season.

Aztecs softball player Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) and baseball pitcher Alessandro Castro were selected as the 2023 recipients of the Lawrence R. Toledo Leadership Award. The award is in honor of Pima's first Athletic Director  Larry Toledo, who was the head of the department for over 25 years. Casadei is heading to Ottawa University Arizona in Surprise, AZ and Castro will play at the University of Arizona. Photo by Raymond Suarez

Pima Community College Athletics selected its student-athletes for its annual Lawrence R. Toledo Leadership Award.

Sophomore Alejandra Castro hit a three-run home run to put the Aztecs ahead in the 4th inning but the softball season came to a close after falling to Central Arizona College 5-4 at the NJCAA Region I, Division I Tournament. The Pima Community College softball team closed out the 2023 season on Saturday at the NJCAA Region I, Division I Tournament.

Freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) was crucial to Pima's offense as she went 3 for 8 with five RBIs and four runs scored as Aztecs softball fell to Central Arizona College 10-9 but bounced back to beat Arizona Western College 8-4 in an elimination game. The Pima Community College softball team (36-23) dropped its opening game but bounced back to avoid elimination on Friday in the first day of the NJCAA Region I, Division I Tournament.

Pima Community College softball standouts Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) earned recognition from the ACCAC conference for their play during the regular season.

Aztecs softball closed out the regular season with a split at Glendale Community College, winning 6-0 and falling 9-8 in eight innings. Freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood threw a complete-game shutout, giving up three hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the first game. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) went 4 for 8 with five RBIs and a run scored on the day. The Aztecs close the regular season at 35-22 overall and 31-17 in ACCAC conference play. The Pima Community College softball team (35-21, 31-17 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season on Saturday at Glendale Community College (13-43, 11-37).

Pima Community College softball players Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS), Analisa Gomez (University HS) and Alejandra Castro signed their letters of intent to four-year universities.

Freshman Camila Zepeda and sophomore Alejandra Castro combined to go 6 for 10 with six RBIs and six runs scored as the Aztecs softball team swept Paradise Valley Community College 10-1 and 15-6. The Pima Community College softball team (34-21, 30-16 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season home schedule on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader against Paradise Valley Community College (11-33, 11-33). They’re on the road to close the regular season on Saturday.

The Pima Community College softball team (32-21, 28-16 in ACCAC) dropped two games to No. 4 ranked South Mountain Community College (47-8, 41-5) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The Pima Community College softball team (32-19, 28-14 in ACCAC) could not contain Central Arizona College’s (37-15, 33-9) offensive onslaught on Tuesday as the teams locked up in an ACCAC doubleheader at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.

Freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) finished the day going 3 for 7 with four RBIs and two runs while freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood got her third straight win and helped her own cause in the second game by going 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. The Pima Community College softball team (32-17, 28-12 in ACCAC) had its eight-game winning streak snapped on Saturday but bounced back to earn the split against Chandler-Gilbert Community College (17-30, 16-26) at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.

Sophomore Stephanie Tapia hit two home runs and finished with five RBIs and two runs scored while freshman Maidosn Fillman-Moreno closed out the day going 3 for 6 with fur RBIs and a run in Pima's sweep at Mesa Community College. The Pima Community College softball team (31-16, 27-11 in ACCAC) continues to roll as it earned an ACCAC conference sweep at Mesa Community College (23-23, 17-23) for its eighth straight win.

The Pima Community College softball team (29-16, 25-11 in ACCAC) won its sixth in a row and head coach Rebekah Quiroz reached a milestone on Tuesday in its sweep over GateWay Community College (8-30, 8-30) at the Papago Sports Complex in Phoenix.

Sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) finished the day 5 for 8 with seven RBIs and a run scored while sophomore Alissandra Montiel (Cholla HS) pitched an 8-inning complete game as the Aztecs softball team swept Arizona Western College 16-4 (five innings) and 6-5 (eight innings). The Pima Community College softball team (27-16, 23-11 in ACCAC) picked up its second straight road sweep over an ACCAC Division I opponent after it claimed two victories at Arizona Western College (22-26, 21-15) on Saturday in Yuma.

Freshmen Camila Zepeda (#4) and Mina Chacon (#5) led the Pima offensive attack as the Aztecs swept Yavapai College winning 10-1 and 25-15. Both games ended after six innings. Zepeda went 4 for 8 with 11 RBIs and five runs scored while Chacon was 5 for 8 with eight RBIs and three runs scored. The Aztecs improved to 25-16 overall and 21-11 in ACCAC conference play.
