The Pima Community College women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a tough contest and it rose to the challenge on Tuesday at the Kino North Grandstand.

The No. 20 Aztecs fell to No. 1 Paradise Valley Community College 2-1 after a scoreless first half.

The Aztecs created scoring opportunities in the first half but couldn't convert. Sophomore Jahmonique Smith (Cienega HS) had a shot that hit the right post and fellow sophomore Alexis Hernandez (Ironwood Ridge HS) had a couple great looks that were stopped by the Pumas' goalkeeper.

Sophomore Taylor Inocencio (St. Augustine Catholic HS) put the Aztecs on the board with her goal in the 86th minute that was assisted by Hernandez. The Aztecs upped the intensity in the final four minutes but fell short in the end. The Pumas scored in the 50th and 69th minutes to take control.

The Aztecs outshot the Pumas 8-4 for the game. Sophomore Tara Kase (Buena HS) finished the game with two saves.

This was the first meeting between these two teams since the Aztecs were eliminated by the Pumas in the Region I, Division I championship game last season. The Pumas went on to capture the NJCAA Division I title.

The Aztecs will play at South Mountain Community College on Saturday in Phoenix. Game time is set for 10:00 a.m.

Pima goal: Inocencio (Hernandez) 86th minute.
