Aztecs women's track & field thrower Akira Jones earns All-American honors at NJCAA National Championship

The Pima Community College 2021 season for women's track & field came to a close on Thursday at the NJCAA Division I National Championships in Levelland, TX.

  • The Aztecs finished with a total of eight team points and tied for 21st in the final team standings.
  • Freshman Akira Jones (Saint David HS) took fifth place in the discus event with a season-best throw of 43.19 meters (141-feet, 8-inches). She hit the mark on her second attempt. Jones earned NJCAA Division I All-American status with her finish and gave Pima four team points.
  • Jones joined sophomores Eliza Littlewood (Campo Verde HS) and Raelynn Fair (South Mountain HS) earning All-American honors. Littlewood took seventh place in the Heptathlon and Fair placed eighth in the Long Jump and became a two-time NJCAA Division I All-American.
  • Coach's Quote: "I'm extremely proud of our team. With this year and Covid, the obstacles we overcame were immense," Pima men's and women's track & field coach Chad Harrison said. "The unity that our team had contributed to our success. Winning the region championships on both the men's and the women's set us up for future success. Our new coaching staff has shown so much growth and belief in the team.
    "We look forward to growing this program into one of the most dominant programs in the country."
  • Pima track & field head coaches Chad Harrison (Men) and Al Shirley (Women) were named ACCAC/Region I Coaches of the Year
  • The Aztecs won their first NJCAA Region I, Division I Team Championship since 1996 (25 years) with a school record of 285 points.
