Aztec Volleyball Falls in Final Match of the Season at Mesa CC

The Pima Community College volleyball team closed out the 2016 season on Friday at Mesa Community College (13-8, 10-6).

The Aztecs fell in straight sets against the Thunderbirds 25-18, 25-20, 25-13.

The Aztecs took an early lead in the first set but Mesa took control and built a 20-10 lead. Pima chipped away at the lead and won six of the next 10 points to trail 22-18. The Thunderbirds scored the final three points to win the first set.

The Aztecs found themselves behind in the second set and were down by as much as eight points at 19-11. The Aztecs scored five of the next six points to cut to 20-16 and got as close as three points at 22-19. The Thunderbirds won three of the final four points. The Aztecs surrendered 13 of the final 14 points in the third set.

Sophomore Aubrey Lomeli (St. Mary's HS) led the Aztecs with 11 kills and 12 digs while freshman Anissa Conrad (Sahuaro HS) had 22 digs and one ace. Freshman Mattea Reeb (Mountain View HS) posted 20 assists and one ace and freshman Trae Johnson (Highland HS) finished with six kills, 12 digs and two aces.

The Aztecs finished the season with a 8-20 overall record and 2-14 in ACCAC conference play. The Aztecs had three sophomores and 10 freshman on this year's team.
