Aztecs volleyball suffer first home loss vs. Yavapai College

The Pima Community College volleyball team (7-13, 4-6 in ACCAC) dropped its match at the West Campus Gymnasium on Wednesday against Yavapai College. The Aztecs fell in straight sets 25-16, 27-25, 25-18.

The Aztecs were in striking distance for much of the first set but the Roughriders (13-9, 7-2) scored four straight points to take a 16-11 advantage. The Aztecs couldn't close the gap and dropped another four straight points to end the set.

Pima fell behind in the second set but secured four straight points to take a 13-12 lead. Freshman Lyrica Tavesi (Pima HS) had a couple of kills to keep Pima's lead at two points at 17-15 and again at 18-16. The Aztecs went up 19-16 but the Roughriders scored six straight points to retake the lead at 22-19 forcing the Aztecs to call timeout. Trailing 24-22, the Aztecs got a kill from freshman Kaitlin Schmich (Mountain View HS) and an ace from sophomore Anissa Conrad (Sahuaro HS) to tie it. The Aztecs failed to take the advantage and dropped the second set.

The Aztecs tied the score on two occasions early in the third set but couldn't overtake the lead.

Schmich led the Aztecs with a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs while sophomore Kayli Riesgo (Cienega HS) finished with 31 assists and 12 digs. Tavesi and sophomore Victoria Davis (Sahuaro HS) each had eight kills while Conrad contributed with 17 digs.

The Aztecs will play their final road match of the regular season on Friday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The match starts at 7:00 p.m.
