(UPDATE) Almaguer named NMMI All-Tournament as Aztecs Volleyball Opens 2021 Season at NMMI Classic

The No. 13 ranked Pima Community College volleyball team (1-3) opened its 2021 season on Friday and Saturday playing four matches against NJCAA Division I teams at the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) Classic in Roswell, NM.
The Aztecs played in three matches against NJCAA nationally ranked teams.
Sophomore Deanna Almaguer was named to the NMMI All-Tournament team as she finished with 32 kills and 38 digs in four matches.

Saturday's Results:

  • (14, Div. I) Seward County CC Saints 3, (14, Div. II) Pima CC Aztecs 1 (25-13, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19): The Aztecs avoided the sweep with a win in the third set but was unable to force a tie-breaker against the Saints.
    Sophomore Kaylee Moseley (Marana HS) finished with 10 kills and four blocks while sophomore Isabella Jacome posted 15 assists, five digs and three aces. Sophomore Aydalis Felix (Rincon HS) had 13 digs in the match.
  • (15, Div. I) Salt Lake CC Bruins 3, (13,Div. II) Pima CC Aztecs 2 (25-13, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 15-6): The Aztecs rallied from an 0-2 deficit against the Bruins to force a fifth-set tie-breaker but ran out of steam in the end.
    Almaguer led the Aztecs with 12 kills while freshman Lina Kassimatis finished with nine kills and sophomore Haley Duncan (Walden Grove HS) had seven kills. Sophomore Karla Soto (Nogales HS) went on to finish the match with 21 assists, seven digs and three aces.

Friday's Results:

  • (3,Div. I) Snow College Badgers 3, (13, Div. II) Pima CC Aztecs 0 (30-28, 25-17, 25-17): The Aztecs and the Badgers battled in extra play during the first set but the Aztecs fell in the end.
    Almaguer finished the match with six kills while Soto had 18 assists. Freshman Isabella Horn (Mogollon HS) posted three kills and three aces.
  • (13, Div. II) Pima CC Aztecs 3, Vernon College Chaparrals 2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-13, 20-25, 15-13): The Aztecs dropped the opening set but rallied off two victories in the second and third games. The Chaparrals forced the tie-breaker and the Aztecs closed it out. Almaguer had a team-high 15 kills to go along with eight digs while Duncan had nine kills and two blocks. Jacome posted 38 assists and two aces.

The Aztecs will play its first home match of the season on Wednesday when they host South Mountain Community College at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. First serve is at 7:00 p.m.
