Aztecs Women's Cross Country runner Oksana Giron named Chapman Automotive Aztecs Student-Athlete of the Week

Pima Community College Women's Cross Country competitor Oksana Giron (Sunnyside HS) was selected as the Chapman Automotive Aztecs Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for the week of Nov. 1-7.

  • Giron, a freshman who is majoring in Mortuary Science, was part of the Aztecs women's cross country team that took second place at the NJCAA Region I, Division I Championships. She finished in seventh place with a personal-record time of 22 minutes, 45.3 seconds and earned All-Region honors.
  • Coach's Quote: "Oksana has constantly improved every time she has raced. She is a tough competitor and such a hard worker," Pima men's and women's cross country co-head coach Mark Bennett said.
  • Giron volunteered at the Los Mezquites races hosted by Sunnyside High School where she helped guide the runners around the course and spray water at runners as they went by. Giron, along with Sunnyside and Pima teammate Yaxiri Ortiz, help the Sunnyside track & field and cross country runners train.
  • Giron, whose brother Baylee has autism, joins him and helps out with events through the Special Olympics. She has given out candy for Halloween and assisted in bowling events helping competitors line up their shots.

The Aztecs men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the NJCAA Division I Championships on Saturday at Pole Green Park in Richmond, VA.
