Aztecs Women's Cross Country Competes at NJCAA Division I National Championships
The Pima Community College women's cross country team closed out its season on Saturday at the NJCAA Division I National Championships.
- The Aztecs finished in 21st place out of 23 teams with a team score of 562.
- Freshman Mykayla Tarwater (Tucson Magnet HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs in the 5K (3.1-mile) race as she took 93rd out of 160 competitors with a collegiate personal-record time of 21 minutes, 49.7 seconds.
- Freshman Oksana Giron (Sunnyside HS) also set a collegiate personal-record as she finished 112th with a time of 22:29.5 while freshman Emalyn Brown (Canyon del Oro HS) placed 117th at 22:52.1.
- Freshman Candice Pocase (Santa Rita HS) was 119th and closed out the race at 23:00.9 and freshman Marissa Lopez (Sahuarita HS) closed the finish line in 121st place at 23:18.6.
- Coach's Quote: "These athletes have come a long way and I am so proud of them. They are so hard-working and have overcome so much," Pima men's and women's cross country co-head coach Mark Bennett said. "The momentum we have generated this season will continue into track season and we are looking to do bigger things next year in cross (country)."
- The Aztecs claimed second place at the NJCAA Region I, Division I Championships.
- They will compete in 2022 track & field beginning in January.
