Andrew Stucky and Rocco Gump each have six RBIs as Baseball bounces back with 21 runs in split at Yavapai College

The Pima Community College baseball team (34-12, 21-9 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC Conference Division I play on Tuesday at Yavapai College (25-14, 18-10).
Sophomore Andrew Stucky (Canyon del Oro HS) finished the day going 4 for 8 with six RBIs, three runs scored, two home runs and two doubles while freshman David Shackelford also went 4 for 8 with five RBIs, three runs scored, a home run, a double and a triple. Sophomore Rocco Gump (Seton Catholic HS) did his damage in the second game with six RBIs, two triples and a double. Jaeden Swanberg (Salpointe Catholic HS) took the loss in the first game and freshman J.T. Drake got his first win of the season.

  • Game 1: Yavapai College Roughriders 9, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Aztecs tied the game but the Roughriders took the lead back and added some insurance.
    Down 2-0 in the top of the 3rd inning, Stucky tied it up after he hit a two-run RBI double to bring in sophomores Luis Garcia (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Gage Mestas, who had singled and doubled respectively in the previous at-bats.
    The Roughriders countered with two runs in the bottom-half of the 3rd to retake the lead.
    Freshman David Shackelford attempted to rally the Aztecs again with a leadoff homer in the 4th inning but Yavapai scored one in the 5th inning and four runs in the 6th.
    Stucky finished the game 1 for 3 with two RBIs while Shackelford was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Garcia went 1 for 2 with a run and Mestas closed out the game going 1 for 4 with a run.
    Swanberg took the loss (4-3) as he pitched three and two-third innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks on 61 pitches.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 21, Yavapai College Roughriders 6 (8 innings): The Aztecs were forced to rally again but this time were able to overtake the Roughriders as they scored 10 runs in the 7th inning and seven runs in the 8th.
    Down 5-2 heading into the 6th inning, the Aztecs built some momentum when freshman Ruben Castro (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI single to score Shackelford, who hit a leadoff triple. Garcia hit a two-out RBI double to plate Castro as Pima trailed 5-4.
    Stucky got it going in the 7th with a leadoff home run to tie the game at 5-5. Freshman Alessandro Castro (Pusch Ridge Christian HS) drew a bases loaded walk to score sophomore Hunter Faildo to give Pima the lead. Gump followed with a three-run RBI triple bringing around Shackelford, Ruben Castro and Alessandro Castro to make it 9-5. Shackelford also cleared the bases in the inning with a three-run RBI double to drive in Mestas, Stucky and sophomore Andrew Maxwell. The Aztecs led 14-5.
    Stucky hit a his second homer of the game with a three-run shot as part of the 8th inning and Faildo followed with a solo shot of his own. Gump hit an RBI triple and an RBI single in the inning.
    Gump had an RBI double in the 4th inning to put Pima up 2-1 as he finished 4 for 6 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Stucky went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Shackelford was 3 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs. Garcia closed out the game going 3 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Ruben Castro and Mestas each scored three runs and had an RBI.
    Drake picked up the win in relief (1-0) as he pitched three innings, giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with seven strikeouts on 46 pitches.

The Aztecs will step away from ACCAC conference play as they host the Scottsdale Post Grad Team on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field. First game of the doubleheader starts at noon.
