Rauer, Aztecs Men's Golf Capture Region I Championships

The Pima Community College men's golf team reigned supreme at the NJCAA Region I, Division I Championship after the final round of competition on Saturday at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort (par 70 course).

The Aztecs won their second straight championship after they posted a four-day team total of 1179 (295-294-296-294). Pima's lead grew after each round as they won by 39-strokes in the final standings. Eastern Arizona College took second place with 1218 (315-293-309-301) while Scottsdale Community College placed third with 1236 (316-292-316-312). Estrella Mountain Community College was fourth with 1325 (334-333-325-330).

Sophomore David Rauer (Cienega HS) ran away with the individual championship as he posted a total score of 286 (72-71-71-72). He was six-over par for the tournament and won by 10-strokes. He took second place in last year's region championship.

The top eight golfers in the individual standings were named to the All-Region I, Division I team. The Aztecs took half of the spots.

Sophomore Will Dennis posted his best round of the tournament on Saturday and finished tied for second place in the standings with a score of 296 (75-75-75-71). Fellow sophomore Frankie Wu (Canyon del Oro HS) struggled a bit in his final round but still managed to finish in fourth place with a 299 (71-74-76-78). Sophomore Wilfred Tewawina (Camp Verde HS) was tied for seventh place with an overall score of 305 (78-77-74-76).

Freshman Jonah Daniels (Chaparral HS) struggled in the third round but responded with a five-over par 75 in the final round. He tied for ninth place with a score of 309 (77-74-83-75).

The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA Championship at the Duran Golf Course in Melbourne, FL from May 16-19.
