Aztecs Men's Soccer Claim West District Title, Advance to NJCAA Division I National Tourney

The Pima Community College men's soccer team (20-2-2) secured its second straight West District Championship as well as its second straight 20-win season on Saturday in La Junta, CO.

The No. 4 ranked Aztecs defeated No. 16 Otero Junior College 3-1 to advance to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Axton, VA.

All the goals in the game were scored in the first half. Sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez (Flowing Wells HS) put the Aztecs on the board with a goal in the 4th minute assisted by sophomore Jason Romero. Otero Junior College tied the game with a goal in the 37th minute.

The Aztecs took control late in the half when sophomore Niels Kool put Pima up for good with a goal in the 42nd minute that was assisted by freshman Kyle VanAlstine (Cienega HS). Jason Romero came back two minutes later with an insurance goal that was assisted by Gonzalez, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Anderson finished the game with five saves.

The NJCAA Division I National Tournament will be at the Smith River Sports Complex in Axton, VA from Nov. 16-21. The tournament bracket will be released early this week.

Pima goals: Gonzalez (Romero) 4th minute; Kool (VanAlstine) 42nd minute; Romero (Gonzalez) 44th minute.
