The Pima Community College men's soccer team (1-0) opened the 2021 season on Saturday at the Kino North Grandstand against ACCAC Division II rival Phoenix College.

  • The No. 3 ranked Aztecs defeated the No. 12 ranked Bears 1-0 in their first meeting since the Region I, Division II Finals game on May 15 where Pima won 2-0. Both teams played in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
  • Sophomore Brian Vu (Rincon HS) scored on a free kick from 20-yards out that cleared the upper right corner of the goal in the 20th minute.
  • "I'm pretty good at finding the corner right there. I asked if I could take it. I felt confident and just tried to place it for the team and luckily it went in," Vu said about his free kick goal. "Our discipline, defense and just working hard for each other, that's what really got us the result. It's a huge win for us because Phoenix is a really great team and nationally ranked. It was a great start for us and hopefully it's momentum for the season."
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Juan Suarez finished the game with seven saves. The Bears had seven shots on goal while the Aztecs finished with three.
  • The Aztecs will play at Glendale Community College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
