Rebekah Quiroz gets 100-win milestone as Aztecs softball sweeps GateWay CC

The Pima Community College softball team (29-16, 25-11 in ACCAC) won its sixth in a row and head coach Rebekah Quiroz reached a milestone on Tuesday in its sweep over GateWay Community College (8-30, 8-30) at the Papago Sports Complex in Phoenix.
Quiroz picked up her 100th win as head coach of the program after Pima's 5-2 win in the first game.
Sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) finished the day 4 for 8 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) went 4 for 6 with an RBI and two runs. Sophomore Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) and freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood got the wins in the circle.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 5, GateWay CC Geckos 2: The Aztecs broke open the game with three runs in the 4th inning.
    Castro hit a leadoff home run to make it 2-0. With two outs, Casadei hit a single and sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) reached base on a double. Gomez came up and knocked them in with a two-run RBI double to put the score at 4-0.
    Casadei wasn't finished as she hit a solo home run in the 6th inning.
    Gomez finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Casadei went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Castro was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS) hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning as she finished 1 for 3 with an RBI.
    Castro got her fourth straight win (12-5) after she pitched a complete game, giving up two runs (none earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, GateWay CC Geckos 2 (5 innings): The Aztecs took the lead in the 1st and poured it on with two runs in the 3rd inning and five in the 4th inning frame.
    Gomez hit an RBI single and Zepeda capped off the 1st inning with a two-run homer to drive her in as the Aztecs went up 3-0.
    The Aztecs added to their lead when freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) hit a two-run shot of her own in the 3rd inning to score Zepeda as Pima went up 5-0.
    The Aztecs got RBI hits from Gomez, Zepeda, freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) and Maria Galloway in the 4th inning to help seal it.
    Zepeda was a flawless 4 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Gomez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs while Zylinski-Wrobel finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Munoz was 2 for 4 with two runs and two steals. Chacon closed it out by going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run.
    Tsosie-Hood got the win (6-3) as she pitched all five innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on three hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

  • Quiroz's also has 606 wins from her time as an assistant coach with the program.
  • "I am very proud of this group and the way they continue to compete. They are road warriors and do a phenomenal job of picking each other up especially through the grind part of post season," Quiroz said. They want to win and they are learning everyday what it means to 'show up.'
    "I am honored to share this moment of 100 wins, and credit my players (past, present and future), the families of the players and especially my coaches. I cannot do what I do without them."

The Aztecs play in their fourth straight road doubleheader on Thursday at Mesa Community College. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
