Tapia and Zylinski-Wrobel homer, Tsosie-Hood gets win as Softball earns split vs. Chandler-Gilbert CC

The Pima Community College softball team (32-17, 28-12 in ACCAC) had its eight-game winning streak snapped on Saturday but bounced back to earn the split against Chandler-Gilbert Community College (17-30, 16-26) at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.
Freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) finished the day going 3 for 7 with four RBIs and two runs scored while sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS) was 4 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. They each homered and hit a double in the game. Sophomore Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) suffered her first loss in the last six starts and freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood picked up her third straight win in the circle.

  • Game 1: Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 4, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Aztecs took the lead in the 2nd inning but the Coyotes scored three unanswered.
    Down 1-0, the Aztecs took the lead in the 2nd inning. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a leadoff single. With one out, Tapia hit a two-run home run to put the Aztecs ahead 2-1.
    The Aztecs added to their in the 3rd inning when Zylinski-Wrobel hit an RBI single to bring around sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS). The Aztecs managed just two hits the rest of the game.
    The Coyotes scored one run in the 5th and took the lead with two runs in the 6th inning.
    Tapia finished the game 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run while Zylinski-Wrobel went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Chacon was 1 for 2 with a run and Gomez went 1 for 4 with a run.
    Castro took the loss (13-6) as she pitched a complete-game, giving up four runs (three earned) on 12 hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 4 (5 innings): The offense set the tone in the 1st inning and Pima closed it out in the 5th inning for the run-rule win.
Tapia hit an RBI single to drive in Gomez, who led off with a single in the 8th. Castro hit a ground-out but it scored freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) to end the game.
The Aztecs wasted little time as they scored eight runs in the 1st inning. Zepeda hit an RBI single to put the Aztecs on the scoreboard. Zylinski-Wrobel followed with a three-run homer to bring in Gomez and Zepeda to make it 4-0. Tsosie-Hood helped her own cause as she hit an RBI single to score Tapia. Munoz also hit an RBI single and Zepeda capped off the inning with a two-run RBI single scoring Tsosie-Hood and sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS).
Casadei and freshman Madison Fillman-Moreno had back-to-back RBI singles in the 4th inning as Pima took a 10-0 lead.
Zylinski-Wrobel finished the game 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Tapia was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Zepeda closed out the game going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Fillman-Moreno was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Casadei and Castro each had an RBI and a run scored. Gomez scored two runs.
Tsosie-Hood finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run as she also picked up her third straight win (8-3) after throwing five innings, giving up four runs (four earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs are back at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field on Tuesday when they host an ACCAC Division I doubleheader against Central Arizona College. First game is set for 1:00 p.m.
