Aztecs Softball falls to No. 4 ranked South Mountain CC

The Pima Community College softball team (32-21, 28-16 in ACCAC) dropped two games to No. 4 ranked South Mountain Community College (47-8, 41-5) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Field.
Since going on an eight-game winning streak, the Aztecs have dropped five of their last six games.
Sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished the day going 3 for 6 with two runs scored, four steals and a walk. Sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS), along with freshmen Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) and Alexis Tsosie-Hood all homered on the day.

  • Game 1: (4) South Mountain CC Cougars 12, Pima CC Aztecs 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs could not contain South Mountain's offense as it scored in every inning. The Pima offense struggled to get going as it generated one run off five hits.
    The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the 4th inning when Tapia drove a home run to center field.
    Tapia finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Munoz went 2 for 3 with a steal while freshman Camila Zepeda was 1 for 3 with a double. Tsosie-Hood went 1 for 2 with a double.
    Freshman Maria Galloway took the loss (0-1) as she pitched three and one-third innings in relief, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits with one walk.

Game 2: (4) South Mountain CC Cougars 8, Pima CC Aztecs 5: The rally fell short for the Aztecs in the second game.
Down 3-0, they got a boost from Tsosie-Hood, who hit a solo home run with one out to left field. The Aztecs continued to chip away in the 3rd inning when Zepeda hit a one-out RBI single to drive in Munoz, who reached base on a fielder's choice. Zylinski-Wrobel hit a fielder's choice and sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) scored on the play to cut Pima's deficit to 4-3.
The Cougars scored four unanswered runs with one in the 4th inning and three in the 5th to make it 8-3.
The Aztecs attempted one last effort to rally as Zylinski-Wrobel hit a two-run shot to center field bringing around Munoz.
Zylinski-Wrobel closed it out going 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Munoz finished 1 for 3 with two runs and three stolen bases while Tsosie-Hood went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Zepeda was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Tsosie-Hood took the loss (8-6) as she pitched four innings, giving up eight runs (five earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

The Aztecs will play their final regular season home doubleheader on Tuesday when they host Paradise Valley Community College at the West Campus Aztec Field. First game starts at 1:00 p.m.
