Pilgrim, Holliday and Stiles claim region titles at Region I Championships

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams claimed three Region I championships and secured a few more national qualifying marks after the third day of the Region I Championships on Tuesday at Mesa Community College.

The women's team finished the day with 66 team points. The men's team closed out the day with a team score of 65.

Kaysee Pilgrim (Goldwater HS) claimed her region championship in the high jump event with a jump of 5-feet, 9¼ inches earning 10 points for the Aztecs. She took second place in last year's Region I Championships.

Jamie Holliday (Sahuaro HS) took first place in the long jump with a winning jump of 18-8. Her jump gave her a national qualifying mark. Holliday earned another three points for the Aztecs with a sixth place finish in the high jump with a mark of 4-9½.

David Stiles (Yuma HS) won the region championship in the javelin throw. He finished with a mark of 160-0. Stiles also gained four points for his fifth place finish in the long jump with a jump of 21-3¼.

In other women's track & field action, the 4x800 relay team of Sarrah Boughan (Canyon del Oro HS), Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells HS), Desire Montenegro (Sunnyside HS) and Raelene Yocupicio (Rio Rico HS) took second place and earned a national qualifying time at 9 minutes, 46.67 seconds.

Rhiannon Reece (Benson HS) earned nine points for the Aztecs after she took fourth place in the pole vault (9-10) and fifth in the javelin throw (107-8).

Juliette Cossey (Sandra Day O'Connor HS) and Maggie Prillaman (Ironwood Ridge HS) earned another eight team points for Pima in the long jump. Cossey took fourth with a jump of 17-2 and Prillaman placed sixth with a 17-1½. Yaritza Ibarra (Catalina HS) and Johany Inda (Pueblo HS) earned another nine team points in the 10,000-meter race. Ibarra took fourth place (47:50.31) and Inda placed fifth (48:44.40).

Blair Benefield (Mohave HS) finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 10-4 earning eight points. Meghan Sweeney (Red Mountain HS) took third place in the high jump and earned six points after a jump of 5-3¼.

In other men's competition, the 4x800 relay team of Amanuel Logo (Catalina HS), Ahmed Mohamed (Rincon HS), Hugo Nieves (Sunnyside HS) and Cruz Rodriguez (Empire HS) took second place and earned a national qualifier as they finished with a time of 7:53.16.

Anfernee Alexander (Santa Cruz Valley Union HS) improved on his national qualifying mark in the hammer throw as he finished in fifth place with a throw of 163-2 earning four points. Cristian Gutierrez (Kingman HS) earned five points for Pima after he took fourth place in the hammer throw with a mark of 163-9.

Luke Ross (Coconino HS) earned 10 points in two events. He finished fourth in each the javelin throw (136-5) and the high jump (6-2). Jeremy Yoyetewa (Amphiteater HS) and Chadwick Arvizo (Ganado HS) earned eight team points for the Aztecs in the 10,000-meter race. Yoyetewa took fourth (37:32.71) and Arvizo placed sixth (40:18.32).

Jared Roth took second in the high jump with a jump of 6-6 which earned eight points. Tyler Johnson (Snowflake HS) took fourth place in the long jump with a mark of 22-3½ earning five points while Drake DeYonge (Palo Verde HS) took sixth in the javelin with a 129-8 earning three points.

Competition for the Region I Championships continues on Thursday at Mesa Community College. Events will begin at 5:00 p.m.
