Alexander and Cossey claim region titles az Aztecs take third at Region I Championships

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams closed out the Region I Championships at Mesa Community College on Thursday claiming five individual region titles.

In the final standings, the men's and the women's teams took third place. The men's team finished with 162 points. Central Arizona College took first place with 277 while Mesa Community College placed second with 190.5. Glendale Community College was fourth (101) and Paradise Valley took fifth (42.5). On the women's side, Pima had 175 points. Central Arizona took first with 294 and Mesa was second with 188. Paradise Valley was fourth (66) and Glendale took fifth (44).

Anfernee Alexander (Santa Cruz Valley Union HS) became a two-time Region I champion in the discus after he set a personal best with a throw of 173-feet, 2 inches. He set the mark on his final throw.

Amanuel Logo (Catalina HS) set a national qualifying mark in the 1,500 meter race. He took third place and finished with a time of 4 minutes, 00.66 seconds.

In women's competition, Juliette Cossey (Sandra Day O'Connor HS) earned her region title in the triple jump. She took first place for good after her fourth jump attempt which gave her a mark of 38-2¼.

The Aztecs came away with five region championships. Kaysee Pilgrim won her region title in the high jump, Jamie Holliday (Sahuaro HS) took first place in the long jump (Pima's fourth consecutive region title in the long jump) and David Stiles (Yuma HS) was tops in the javelin throw.

The Aztecs will send 25 national qualifiers to the NJCAA National Tournament at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, KS from May 14-16.
