Aztecs Track & Field Set 15 National Qualifying Marks to Open Indoor Season

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams made plenty of noise in their first meet of the indoor season on Saturday.

The Aztecs set 15 indoor national qualifying marks at the Puma Indoor Invitational at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix.

In women's competition, sophomore McKenna McGrath (St. David HS) set two indoor national qualifying marks. She took first place in the high jump with a mark of 5-feet, 7.25 inches. She finished second in the long jump with a mark of 17-11. Sophomore Meghan Sweeney (Red Mountain HS) placed second in the high jump at 5-5.25 for her qualifying mark.

Freshman Hannah Bartz (Mountain View HS) also set two indoor qualifiers on the day. She took first place in the long jump with a jump of 18-9.75. She was also part of the 4x400 relay team with freshman Amber McCroskey (Buena HS), sophomore Marisa Lemus and freshman Melissa Cotsonas (Mountain View HS) that finished in third place and set a qualifying time of 4 minutes, 06.69 seconds.

The Aztecs produced three qualifiers in the women's 3,000 meter race. Freshman Kelsey Montano (Tucson Magnet HS) took third place with a time of 11:04.59. Fellow freshman Katy Loyd (Catalina HS) finished fourth at 11:08.99 and sophomore Elizabeth Deaton (Cienega HS) placed ninth with a time of 11:23.61.

In the women's triple jump, sophomore Juliette Cossey (Sandra Day O'Connor HS) was second with a mark of 36-0 and freshman Grecia Castillo-Villegas took third place at 34-7.75.

In men's competition, sophomore Amanuel Logo (Catalina HS) took first place in the 1,000 meter race with an indoor qualifying time of 2:33.20. Fellow sophomore Ahmed Mohamed (Rincon HS) closed out the 3,000 meter race in first place with a qualifying time of 8:50.67. Sophomore Mark Bennett (Marana HS) took third in the 3,000 meter race with a qualifying time of 8:55.39.

Freshman Sam Shoultz (Corona del Sol HS) set a qualifying jump as he finished first in the high jump with a mark of 6-10.75. Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Snowflake HS) took second place in the long jump with a qualifying mark of 23-3.25.
