Aztecs Track & Field Set Eight New National Qualifiers at Aztec Indoor Invitational

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams hosted the Aztec Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the West Campus track.

The Aztecs set eight new indoor national qualifying marks and improved on a couple of previous ones.

In women's competition, the No. 11 ranked Aztecs set three new national qualifiers and improved on three events.

Freshman Amber McCroskey (Buena HS) tied the Pima school record and set her indoor national qualifying time in the 60 meter race at 7.81 seconds.

The 4,000 meter distance medley relay team of freshman Katherine Loyd (Catalina Magnet HS), freshman Melissa Cotsonas (Mountain View HS), sophomore Desire Montenegro (Sunnyside HS) and sophomore Kelsey Montano (Tucson Magnet HS), took second place with a qualifying time of 12 minutes, 58.96 seconds which put them No. 4 in the nation. Montano also set a national qualifier in the one-mile race with a time of 5:32.57.

Freshman Grecia Castillo-Villegas improved on her national qualifying mark in the triple jump. She set a new mark of 36-feet, 10.25 inches; her old mark was 34-7.75. Freshman Hannah Bartz (Mountain View HS) improved her qualifier in the long jump from 18-9.75 to 19-3.25. Sophomore Juliette Cossey (Sandra Day O'Connor HS) improved on her mark in the triple jump from 36-0 to 36-5.50.

In men's competition, the No. 19 ranked Aztecs set five indoor national qualifiers.

Sophomore Amanuel Logo (Catalina Magnet HS) took first place in the one-mile race with a national qualifying time of 4:23.59. That time put him No. 9 in the nation. Logo, along with freshman Alan Leyva (Douglas HS), and sophomores Ahmed Mohamed (Rincon HS) and Mark Bennett (Marana HS) took second in the 4,000 meter distance medley relay with a time of 10:26.04. That qualifying time put them No. 3 in the nation.

Freshman Nicolas Sibley (Mountain Pointe HS) set his national qualifier in the triple jump as he took first place with a jump of 46-6.75.

Freshman Isaiah Banks (Mountain Pointe HS) and Treyshon Malone (Yuma Catholic HS) each set marks in the long jump. Banks took second place with a jump of 23-0.50 while Malone placed third at 22-10.

The Aztecs have 28 indoor national qualifying marks on the indoor season.

The Aztecs will compete in the Glendale Indoor Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Glendale Community College. The meet will begin at noon.
