Logo Takes Second in 1,000 Meter, Loyd Scores Points in Three Events at NJCAA Indoor Nationals

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams competed in the NJCAA Indoor National Championships at the JDL Fast Track facility in Winston-Salem, NC on Friday and Saturday.

In men's competition, the Aztecs finished in 15th place out of 27 teams with a team score of 17 points.

Sophomore Amanuel Logo (Catalina HS) accounted for 12 of those points. He took second place and earned NJCAA All-American status in the 1,000 meter race with a time of 2 minutes, 32.01 seconds. That gave the Aztecs eight points. Festus Lagat from Gillette College (WY) won the race with a time of 2:31.43.

Logo also took fifth place in the one-mile run, setting a new Pima school record with a time of 4:15.41 earning Pima four points.

Freshman Sam Shoultz (Corona del Sol HS) took fourth place in the high jump and earned five points for Pima with his jump of 6-8.75.

The women's team finished 20th out of 28 teams in the team standings with 8.75 points.

Freshman Katherine Loyd (Catalina HS) earned points for the Aztecs in three events. She took seventh place in the one-mile run with a personal-best time of 5 minutes, 21.32 seconds giving Pima two points. She placed eighth in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:37.85 earning Pima one point.

Loyd, along with freshman Melissa Cotsonas (Mountain View HS), and sophomores Desire Montenegro (Sunnyside HS) and Kelsey Montano (Tucson Magnet HS) placed sixth in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:49.87 earning the Aztecs three points.

Sophomore Meghan Sweeney (Red Mountain HS) earned two-and-half points for the Aztecs as she tied for sixth place in the high jump. She finished with a jump of 5-feet, 5.25 inches. Freshman McKenna McGrath (St. David HS) picked up 0.25 points as she tied for eighth place in the high jump with jump of 5-3.25.

The Aztecs will begin the track & field outdoor season at the Willie Williams Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona. It will be Friday-Saturday, Mar. 18-19 at the Roy P. Drachman stadium. Events will begin Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
