Shoultz Breaks School Record in High Jump as Track Sets 10 More Qualifiers

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams set 11 new outdoor season national qualifiers at the Puma Outdoor Distance & Multi-Meet this weekend.

A week after tying the Pima school record in the high jump, freshman Sam Shoultz (Corona del Sol HS) broke the record. He took first place and finished with a record-setting jump of 7-feet, 1.50-inches (2.17 meters). He improved from last week's jump of 7-.50 (2.15 meters).

Freshman Treyshon Malone (Yuma Catholic HS) set an outdoor national qualifying time in the 110-meter hurdles as he took fifth place with a time of 15.25 seconds.

Sophomore Mark Bennett (Marana HS) set his second national qualifying time as he took fourth place in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 32 minutes, 01.36 seconds. He set a qualifier in the 5,000 meter race last week. Freshman Armando Antonio Jr. (Desert View HS) also set a national qualifying time in the 10,000 meter race as he finished 10th at 33:57.62.

In women's competition, sophomore Kelsey Montano (Tucson Magnet HS) took first place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a national qualifying time of 11:51.93.

Freshman Grecia Castillo-Villegas finished first in the triple jump as she set a national qualifying mark with a jump of 37-2 (11.33 meters).

The Aztecs sealed five national qualifiers in the 10,000 meter race alone. Freshman Katherine Loyd (Catalina HS) led the way as she took first place with a time of 37:17.43; Loyd set a national qualifier last week in the 5,000 meter race. Fellow freshman Samantha Felzien finished third with a time of 39:47.16. Sophomore Elizabeth Deaton placed sixth with a time of 41:52.47 while fellow sophomore Yaritza Ibarra (Catalina HS) took eighth at 43:04.45. Sophomore Edith Arvizu (Rio Rico HS) finished the race in ninth place with a national qualifying time of 44:40.73.

The Aztecs, who are both ranked No. 10 in the NJCAA/USTFCCCA national polls, have combined for 20 outdoor national qualifying marks in the first two meets of the season.

The Aztecs will compete in the ACCAC Meet next Saturday at Central Arizona College in Coolidge. Events begin at 11:00 a.m.
