Montano Breaks Pima School Record in Steeplechase at Triton Invitational

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams competed in their final regular season events on Friday and Saturday at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, CA hosted by the University of California-San Diego.

Sophomore Kelsey Montano (Tucson Magnet HS) broke the Pima school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as she finished with a time of 11 minutes, 12.65 seconds. Her time put her No. 1 in the country. She improved her national qualifying time by 39 seconds as her previous mark was set at 11:51.93.

Samantha Felzien set a national qualifying time in 5,000 meter race. She finished with a time of 19:28.93. She also has a national qualifier in the 10,000 meter race. Freshman Katy Loyd (Catalina HS) improved on her national qualifying time in the 5,000 meter race as she crossed with a time of 18:41.21; her previous mark was set at 18:41.71.

In men's competition, sophomore Ahmed Mohamed (Rincon HS) set a national qualifying time in the 5,000 meter race. He finished with a time of 15:05.64. He also improved on his previous time in the 1,500 meter race. He finished at 3:58.53; an improvement from 4:00.78.

Sophomore Amanuel Logo (Catalina HS) set a new national qualifying mark in the 800 meter race with a time of 1:54.78. He also improved on his time in the 5,000 meter race. He finished with a time of 15:05.39; his previous qualifier was at 15:15.88.

Sophomore Jomari Collie earned a national qualifying time in the 110 meter hurdles as he finished with a time of 14.83 seconds. Freshman Treyshon Malone (Yuma Catholic HS) improved on his qualifier in the 110 hurdles as he posted a time of 15.11. His previous mark was 15.25.

Sophomore Estevan Gomez (Tucson Magnet HS) took ninth place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:54.50. He improved on his national qualifier by almost 15 seconds (10:09.28). Fellow sophomore Mark Bennett (Marana HS) improved on his time in the 5,000 meter race. He crossed the finish line at 15:06.39 which was almost a 10 second improvement from his previous qualifier at 15:16.17.

Freshman Sam Shoultz (Corona del Sol HS) took first place in the high jump with a mark of 2.11 meters.

The Aztecs conclude the regular season with 36 national qualifying marks.

The Aztecs will compete in the Region I Multi-Events at Mesa Community College on Monday and Tuesday.
