Bennett Takes Fourth, Loyd Finishes Fifth in 10,000 Meters at NJCAA Nationals

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams began competition in the NJCAA Division I National Championships on Tuesday at the South Plains College in Levelland, TX.

The Aztecs men's team finished the day in 12th place with five points while the women's team is tied for 10th place with four points.

Sophomore Mark Bennett (Marana HS) took fourth place in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 32 minutes, 04.65 seconds earning five points for the Aztecs. He set his national qualifier at 32:01.36 in March.

In women's 10,000 meter race, freshman Katherine Loyd (Catalina HS) earned four points for the Aztecs as she took fifth place with a time of 40:28.78. She set her national qualifier in March at 39:17.43. Freshman Samantha Felzien took ninth place in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 41:54.01.

Sophomore Juliette Cossey (Sandra Day O'Connor HS) took 10th place in the triple jump with a mark of 11.58 meters. She won the Region I Championship in the triple jump with a jump of 12.03 meters. She finished a two-time Region I Champion in triple jump at Pima.

In other men's competition, the 4x800 relay team of sophomore Hugo Nieves (Sunnyside HS), sophomore Ahmed Mohamed (Rincon HS), freshman Nick Hald (Mountain View HS) and sophonmore Amanuel Logo (Catalina HS) finished in ninth place with a time of 7 minutes, 59.20 seconds.

Freshman Nic Sibley (Mountain Pointe HS) finished 18th in the triple jump with a mark of 13.20 meters. He won the Region I Championship in the triple jump with jump of 14.21 meters.

Competition continues tomorrow at South Plains College in Levelland, TX with events beginning at 9:00 a.m. (CDT).
