Montano and LaFaye Earn Points; Collie Breaks School Record at NJCAA Nationals

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams completed the second day of competition at the NJCAA Division I National Championships at South Plains College in Levelland, TX.

The women's team earned another three points on the day and are tied for 15th place with seven points. The men's team gained two points and sit in 18th place with seven points.

Sophomore Kelsey Montano (Tucson Magnet HS) earned three points for the Aztecs as she took sixth place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. She finished with a time of 11 minutes, 53.56 seconds. She won the Region I Championship in the steeplechase at 11:46.38.

Sophomore Reece LaFaye (Marana HS) finished in seven place for the decathlon with 5946 points. He earned two team points for the Aztecs. LaFaye took first place in the 1,500 meter race with a time of 4:36.50 and claimed fourth place in the javelin with a mark of 44.27 meters (145-3).

In other men's competition, sophomore Jomari Collie broke the Pima school record in the 110 hurdles as he finished his preliminary race in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.33.

Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Snowflake HS) took 12th place in the long jump with a jump of 7.08 meters (23-2.75). He won the Region I Championship with a leap of 7.23 meters (23-8.75). Freshman Treyshon Malone (Yuma Catholic HS) finished in 11th place with a jump of 7.13 meters (23-4.75).

In other women's competition, freshman Hannah Bartz (Mountain View HS) took 11th place in the long jump with a leap of 5.56 meters (18-feet, 3-inches). She won the Region I Championship in the long jump with a jump of 5.91 meters (19-4.75).

The final day of the NJCAA Division I National Championships will be tomorrow. Events begin at 10:00 a.m. (CDT).
