Jumper Shoultz Claims NJCAA National Title in High Jump
The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams completed competition in the NJCAA Division I National Championships on Thursday in Levelland, TX.
The Aztecs men's team produced two NJCAA All-Americans in the final day. They finished in 10th place with a final score of 27 points. The women's team took 20th with a score of nine points.
Freshman Sam Shoultz (Corona del Sol HS) claimed the National Championship in the high jump event and set a new Pima school record in the process. He cleared his final jump at 2.18 meters (7-feet, 1.75 inches). Shoultz also gained first team NJCAA All-American.
"Sam is a very hard-working individual that is a fierce competitor," Pima jumps coach Chad Harrison said. "His performance today was up and down. He struggled at easy heights but when the competition got really fierce he started clearing the heights.
"He never missed practice this year and always came to work. His athleticism is very shocking and has a calm personality. He's very coachable and listens very well."
Sophomore Amanuel Logo (Catalina HS) picked up another six points for the Aztecs when he finished in third place for the 800 meter race with a time of 1 minutes, 52.87 seconds. Logo gained NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention for his finish. It was his second NJCAA All-American honor as he placed second in the 1,000 meter race during the indoor season.
Sophomore Jomari Collie took fifth place in the 110 meter hurdles as he finished with a time of 14.48 seconds earning four team points. He broke the Pima school record in his preliminary race on Wednesday when a time of 14.33.
In women's competition, sophomore Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells HS) finished in seventh place for the 800 meter race with a time of 2:15.83. She earned two team points for the Aztecs.
"We had the best team performance in over 10 years with the men finishing 10th," Pima track & field coach Greg Wenneborg said. "We took 34 athletes to nationals which is more than any year since I've been at Pima. During the season, seven school records were broken as well. We are very happy with the results and proud of the student-athletes who worked so hard to make this happen."
The Aztecs had eight athletes secure top seven finishes to claim team points.
