Women's Basketball forward Matehya Aberle named Chapman Automotive Aztecs Student-Athlete of the Week

Pima Community College women's basketball freshman Matehya Aberle dedicated her time at a special event during the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four in Minneapolis earlier this month.

  • Aberle a forward, was named the Chapman Automotive Aztecs Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 4-10.
  • She was raised on the Black Mesa Reservation and attended Holbrook High School. She finished in the 3.0-3.5 GPA range in her first semester at Pima, She is working towards her Liberal Arts degree, and is majoring in Occupational Therapy.
  • Aberle was part of a basketball clinic held at the Minneapolis American Indian Center where she assisted in mentoring and coaching young indigenous athletes from ages 5-15. She also talked about her journey coming from the reservation to Pima.
  • Aberle traveled with her mother, Elisha Johns-Aberle, to Minneapolis during the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four weekend. Johns-Aberle was recognized by the NCAA as a pioneer for Native American athletes and those who participated in Division I Women's Basketball.
  • Aberle was member of the National Honors Society. She volunteered at elementary schools; tutoring and monitoring students as well as community clean up projects.
  • She helped the Aztecs earn a 20-11 overall record and a runner-up finish at the NJCAA Region I, Division II Tournament. She averaged 8.9 points and 3.9 rebounds in 21 games played.
