Waugh and Acoista's double-doubles help Women's Basketball bounce back at Chandler-Gilbert CC

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (7-2, 4-1 in ACCAC) got back in the win column after Saturday's loss with a win on Wednesday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (6-4, 2-3).

  • The No. 14 ranked Aztecs held off the Coyotes 61-50.
  • The Aztecs closed out the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 26-16 lead at the break. Up 32-24 in the third quarter, they went on a 7-0 run with baskets from freshmen Gabby Lopez (Bisbee HS), Rylei Waugh and a three-pointer by Sage Begay (Flagstaff HS) to give Pima their biggest lead of the game at 39-24. The Coyotes cut it down to single digits as the Aztecs led 43-34 entering the fourth.
  • Freshman Kennedi Niemann hit a three-pointer and sophomore Dominique Acosta scored on a jumper to open the fourth quarter and get the lead back to 15 points at 48-34. The Coyotes hit back-to-back three-pointers to make it an eight-point game at 56-48 with 1:47 left in the game but Acosta scored again to halt the run to put the score at 58-48 with 1:35 left. Waugh hit three free throws at the end to help seal it.
  • Waugh tip-toed around a triple-double as she scored a team-high 23 points to go along with 11 rebounds and seven assists. She finished 9 for 20 from the field.
  • Acosta was 9 for 19 shooting and closed out the game with 18 points, 14 rebounds and two steals.
  • Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) was also a force on the glass as she had 14 rebounds to go along with three points. The Aztecs had 21 offensive boards as Hoffmeyer, Acosta and Waugh each finished with five.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday when they host South Mountain Community College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
