The Pima Community College baseball team (44-14) is heading back to the Region I, Division I Championship round for a second consecutive season.

Freshman point guard Rylei Waugh (Westchester HS, CA) committed to San Jose State University, an NCAA Division I school in California. The Spartans play in the Mountain West Conference. Waugh played in all 35 games this season and owns the school record with 43 points in a single game. She also owns NJCAA National Tournament records in free throws made in a game and free throws made in a tournament. Photo by Raymond Suarez

Pima Community College women’s basketball player Rylei Waugh (Westchester HS, CA) will continue her education and collegiate career at the NCAA Division I level.

The Pima Community College baseball team (43-14) was forced to rally in the first game of the Region I, Division I Semifinals on Thursday against Arizona Western College (37-16) at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The Aztecs Men's Track & Field team captured their second straight Region I Team Championship with a total of 258 points. Darlington Onsarigo (Triple Jump), Nathaniel Curtiss (High Jump), Abraham Valenzuela (5,000 meters) and the 4x400 relay team (Jordan Cortner, Wyatt Preble, Braxton Hinton and Broden Cahoon) captured Region I individual crowns in Thursday's competition. The Pima Community College men’s track & field team closed out competition at the Region I Championships on Thursday at Mesa Community College.

The Women's High Jump group secured 24 points as freshmen April Necaise and Ja'Niya Ross tied for first place while fellow freshman Izzy Green took third place. They all cleared 1.68 meters (5-6). The Pima Community College baseball team was represented in the All-ACCAC conference and All-Region I, Division I teams as seven players came away with accolades.

Aztecs women's golfers Myranda Moreno (Tucson Magnet HS) and Kayley Yanez (Marana HS) finished play in the Southwest District Tournament in Weatherford, TX. Moreno placed 32nd with a three-round total of 252 (82-86-84) and Yanez closed out the tournament in 33rd place with a 253 (89-82-82). Pima Community College women’s golfers Myranda Moreno (Tucson Magnet HS) and Kayley Yanez (Marana HS) finished up play at the NJCAA Southwest District Tournament on Wednesday held at the Canyon West Golf Club in Weatherford, TX.

Freshman Nasir Tucker won the Long Event with a mark of =7.59 meters (24-feet, 11-inches) while freshman Adam McCoy claimed the Region title in the Pole Vault with a mark of 4.67 meters (15-3.75). The Aztecs sit in first place in the team standings with 103 points. Mesa Community College is second with 86 points and Central Arizona College is third with 63 points. The Pima Community College men’s track & field team competed in the first day of the Region I Championships on Tuesday at Mesa Community College.

The Aztecs softball snapped a four-game skid after sweeping Yavapai College 13-4 and 4-3 on Tuesday at Aztec Field. After the games, the seven sophomores were recognized. The Pima Community College softball team (37-12, 24-6 in ACCAC) got back on track on Tuesday snapping a four-game skid.

Freshman Morgan Pepe (Ironwood Ridge HS) captured the Region I title in the Pole Vault as she finished with a mark of 3.72 meters (12-feet, 2.50-inches) on her first attempt. Sophomore Nick Arias went 4 for 8 with three RBIs and three runs scored on the day while fellow sophomore Cazares hit the go-ahead hit in the first game and went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs on the day as No. 10 Pima Baseball closed out the regular season with a split at South Mountain Community College; winning 10-7 and falling 7-5. The Pima Community College baseball team (42-14, 26-12 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season on Saturday at South Mountain Community College (32-23, 22-16).

Freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) finished the day going 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored but the Aztecs softball team dropped their fourth straight as they were swept at Eastern Arizona College falling 8-0 and 7-6. The Pima Community College softball team (35-12, 22-6 in ACCAC) struggled on the road for the second straight ACCAC doubleheader as it fell at Eastern Arizona College (32-8, 27-3).

Ken Jacome was named the new Pima Community College Athletic Director. He will also remain as the head baseball coach. The Pima Community College Athletics department has a new leader. Ken Jacome, the Pima baseball head coach for the last six years, accepted the Athletic Director’s position. Jacome is 214-90 in six seasons. He picked up his 200th win on March 19 at Glendale Community College. He will remain the program’s head coach.

The Pima Men's Golf team took second place in the final team standings at the Region I Championships. Freshman Caysen Wright earned All-Region I, Division I honors after he finished eighth in the final standings. The Pima Community College men’s golf team closed out the 2024 season on Thursday in the Region I, Division I Championships held at the Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler.

Sophomore Broden Cahoon took second place in the Decathlon with 6373 points while fellow sophomore Abraham Valenzuela (Palo Verde HS) placed second in the 10,000 meters race at 32:30.78. The Pima Community College men’s track & field team began postseason competition on Monday and Tuesday at the Region I Multi’s Championships held at Mesa Community College.

Freshman Maylee Thompson (Willcox HS) finished fourth in the Heptatlon with 4081 points while freshman Mariah Cruz (Mountain View HS) placed fifth in the 10,000 meters race with a time of 46:26.09.
