Stine and Estrella each have 3 RBIs as baseball splits with Glendale

The Pima Community College baseball team (10-8, 8-6 in ACCAC) dropped a wild first game against Glendale Community College but responded to take the second game on Saturday at the West Campus.

Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS) finished the day 3 for 4 with four walks, three RBIs and two runs scored while Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS) went 4 for 7 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 1: Glendale CC Gauchos 10, Pima CC Aztecs 8 (10 innings)

The Aztecs had to rally a few times but their final rally in the 10th inning fell short in their 10-8 loss. Down 10-5 in the 10th, Estrella scored on a wild pitch, Ryan Ramsower (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored on an error and pinch runner David Oropeza (Nogales HS) scored on Devin Harrison's RBI single.

The Aztecs, down 5-2, forced the game into extra innings after scoring three runs in the 7th inning. Trevor Johnson led it off with a solo homer to right-center field. Later, Stine hit a two-run RBI single to plate Jaquese Moore (Marcos de Niza HS) and Harrison. Stine finished 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs, a run scored and two walks. Harrison was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Aztecs used seven pitchers in the first game as Daniel Tolano (Cholla HS) took the loss (0-1). Starter Justin Hammergren (Sahuaro HS) pitched five and two-third innings giving up five runs (five earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Glendale CC Gauchos 5 (7 innings)

The Aztecs had to put together another rally in the second game and this time was successful as they beat Glendale 7-5. Down 5-3 after the top-half of the 5th inning, the Aztecs scored three runs to take the lead for good. With the bases loaded and one out, Al Cruz (Nogales HS) reached on an error that scored Moore. Estrella was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat which plated Harrison to tie the game. Ramsower hit the ball back to the pitcher and as the play went to second base, Stine scored to make it 6-5. Pinch runner Travis Chavez (Ironwood Ridge HS) added an insurance run in the 6th inning. Estrella was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored while Stine went 0 for 1 with two walks and a run scored.

Vinnie Tarantola (Sahuaro HS) pitched five innings giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Marcel Renteria (Nogales HS) earned the save after pitching the final two innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host GateWay Community College in a conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
