Aztecs baseball beats Monros CC, falls against Arizona Western

The Pima Community College baseball team (15-12) closed out the week with two games at the West Campus on Saturday.

Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS) finished the day 3 for 8 with five RBIs and three runs scored while Trevor Johnson went 3 for 7 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Pima CC Aztecs 8, Monroe CC Tribunes 3

The Aztecs broke up a scoreless game scoring three runs in the 4^th inning as they beat Monroe Community College 8-3. Up 3-1 in the 5^th, Stine hit an RBI double that was followed by Johnson's RBI triple to put Pima up 5-1. Devin Harrison (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit a two-run RBI triple in the 6^th inning to make it 7-2.

Johnson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Harrison was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Stine went 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Jaquese Moore (Marcos de Niza HS) went 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

Justin Hammergren (Sahuaro HS) got the win (2-1) after he pitched eight innings giving up three runs (three earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Johnson pitched the final inning giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Arizona Western College Matadors 9, Pima CC Aztecs 7

The Aztecs rallied after being down 5-0 to take the lead in the 7^th inning but Arizona Western had a rally of their own in the 8^th in Pima's 9-7 loss.

Down 5-0 in the 4^th, Johnson hit a solo home run to put the Aztecs on the board. In the 7^th with bases loaded and one out, Stine connected on a 2-2 pitch and drove it out to left field for a grand-slam that put the Aztecs up 7-5. Arizona Western scored three runs in the 8^th and one in the top of the 9^th to help seal it.

Stine went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Johnson was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored and Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS) finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Jacob Northrup (Sahuaro HS) took the loss (0-1) after he pitched two innings giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits with one strikeout and two walks. Vinnie Tarantola (Sahuaro HS) started the game and went seven innings giving up five runs (five earned), all in the 3^rd inning, on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks on 133 pitches.

The Aztecs will play a single game on Monday against the White Rock Tritons at the West Campus. The game will start at 2:30 p.m.
